The award to Tecnimont, in Joint Venture with the Chinese partner HuanQiu Contracting & Engineering Corporation Ltd. (HQC), of two important packages of the RAPID complex, under development by Petronas Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation – a company of the Petronas Group - is a further demonstration of the company's global leadership in the polyolefins business, and allows Tecnimont to expand its presence in South East Asia: an area with strong downstream growth prospects, where investments in hydrocarbons are rapidly increasing.
The first package includes the implementation of two Polypropylene Units on an EPCC Lump Sum Turn-Key basis for the RAPID complex (Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development). The two units will be located inside the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), in Southeastern Johor, Malaysia.
The contract includes engineering services, equipment and material supply, construction activities up to plant start up, and performance testing of two polypropylene units that will be based on Basell’s Spheripol and Spherizone technology and will have a capacity of 450,000 t/y each.

Subsequently, Tecnimont has been awarded an additional package of the RAPID complex, which includes the implementation of a high-density polyethylene unit based on EPCC Lump Sum Turn-Key. The Project’s Scope of Work envisages the provision of complete engineering services, equipment and material supply, erection and construction activities up to start up and guarantee test run. The high-density polyethylene unit will be based on Basell‘s Hostalen Advance Cascade Process (HACP) technology and will have a capacity of 400,000 t/y.
As a result of the development of new joint technology programs involving both industry and universities, in May 2017 Maire and PETRONAS sponsored the twinning of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) with the Milan Polytechnic. This cooperation creates opportunities for postgraduate students from both countries to exchange skills in the field of gas monetization and ultimately creates high-quality job opportunities.
